Create Better Links to Get More Event Registrations

If you go to a web page only to find yourself moving the mouse from top to
bottom and corner to corner trying to find a link, take a moment to notice why
you are having difficulty navigating through the page.

Creating effective web
links is simple, but often overlooked.  If you are using online
registration for your event, the quality of the link from your website to the
online form can impact the number of people who register for your event.

In most cases, a link should not stand on its own as you cannot assume that
people will be ready to register without knowing the details of the event.
Consider this your opportunity to make a sale and come up with an enticing
description and list pertinent details such as the event date, time, location
and price.

Once people are interested in registering for your event, make the link easy
to see and use by following these three tips.

1. Position links near the top of the page.

Studies show that many web users do not scroll down a page in search of links
or other information.  To ensure your link is seen by most visitors, make
sure it appears in the top half of the screen.

2. Use simple and clear presentation.

Readers grow tired of fancy graphics and animations if they don’t enhance
your message.  Text links can be very effective, but keep the contrast high
between your font and background.  Make links stand out by using
underlining and if the link is separate form paragraph text you may want to use
a slightly larger font and add some white space above and below to make it
standout even more.

3. Write brief link text.

Brief but meaningful link text is the most effective at calling users to
action.  Avoid divulging too much information within the link phrase and
avoid putting verb phrases in your link text.

For example, avoid the following sentences in your link text:

To register for this event, click here.

In favor of:

Go to the registration form now.

Purchase tickets.

Following these tips will help to get more people to your registration form,
but don’t stop here.  Try searching terms like “good link text” or
“effective links” in a search engine for more information and implement these
ideas for your entire website.
