- Have a fully filled out profile including a website link. Many Twitter users will decide to follow a user based on the description. No description and no picture might leave people wondering if you’re a spammer.
- Respond to @mentions and thank Twitter users for retweets. Show that you are active and interested in creating relationships and communicating with others. Gratitude and recognition goes a long way.
- Send out different types of tweets. Share links to resources and helpful articles. Ask questions. Make comments. Share tips. Tweet images. Keep things varied and interesting.
- Use lists to organize and manage who you are following and focus on the tweeps that matter most.
- Set up searches around your important keywords to help you keep tabs on what’s going on in your industry and what’s being discussed. Look for opportunities to jump into conversations or make helpful recommendations.
- Set up a search around your company’s name. Some Twitter users might not @ mention you directly, but may still be talking about your brand.
- Spread your tweets out throughout the day. Rather than sending out five tweets back to back, schedule them to go out throughout the day to maintain an active presence.
- Give credit where credit is due. Include @mention shout outs with the resources you are sharing.
- Have fun and be personable. Imagine that your Twitter activity is like a conversation. Use language that you would actually use in a real live interaction with someone.
- Make it known that you are active on Twitter. Include links to your profile on your website and blog. Make sure that your blog posts, your event page, your event registration form and all your important web content have share via Twitter options.
- Send automatic direct messages. Twitter users have their messages feeds filled with these non-personalized, spammy messages. Don’t add yours to the noise. Focus on engagement instead.
- Stuff your tweets with hashtags. Generally one or two per post is considered a best practice.
- Fill your stream with self-promotional content or sales tweets. Yes, it’s tempting when you have an event coming up to focus your tweets around promoting it but your tweets should still have a good dose of relevant, interesting information in addition to your event promotions. Variety is key.
- Only tweet your own content. Share interesting articles and resources from other Twitter users. Position yourself as a valuable source of content for your target market.
- Favourite tweets at random in an effort to get your account noticed. Use this function only to highlight really valuable tweets or tweets that paint you and your business in a positive light.
