March is already here, which means conference season isn’t too far away! With that sentence alone you may have felt some urgency in ensuring everything is on-track for what our industry considers the busiest time of year. This month we’ll talk about creating some urgency when promoting your event to help increase your registration count.
When you ask most people who attended the now famous Canada vs. USA Gold Medal Hockey game last Sunday, they would probably say they wouldn’t trade those tickets for anything. Ask a die hard fan who is without a ticket what they would do to obtain one, and your answer may range from tens of thousands of dollars, to perhaps their right arm! This sort of urgency is what all event planners dream of.
So, how do you create such urgency? Start with these ideas:

- Use headlines in marketing materials like “Sold out last year, don’t miss out this year!”
- State the event is limited to x number of registrations
- Consider showing the number of spaces left on your registration form
- State that a waitlist will not be offered
- Don’t make your early bird date too far into the future
- Consider stating that pre-registration is required in order to accommodate everyone
- Make the registration deadline clear. As it gets closer, highlight that in your marketing materials to get people motivated
